Paddy’s Purpose resumes at The Windmill

We had our first Paddy’s Purpose workshop at The Windmill yesterday. A group of lively 6-8yr old Beavers came along to learn what it might be like to live with disabilities. They talked about different conditions like epilepsy and cerebral palsy and got to try tube feeding our Peg-fed-ted. They also got to have a close look at some mobility equipment including a standing frame, bath seat and wheelchair.
The children we support at The DCF can often have negative experiences in their communities because they may appear or behave a little different. Other children may avoid playing with them or speaking to them because they’re not sure what to say. By talking openly to others their age about disabilities, and allowing them to ask questions without judgement, it helps give children the confidence to approach and include any child they may meet, no matter their differences, breaking down barriers.
Today’s children are tomorrow’s decision makers, let’s get them thinking about disability and accessibility now so that one day we may well see a more inclusive society.
